Arizona House approves repeal of anti gaming law

The Arizona House passed a bill to repeal the anti gaming law but bar the governor from backing off-reservation casinos. The 32 27 vote opens a clash with a Senate measure that repeals the same law without addressing off-reservation gaming. House Speaker Mark Killian says a compromise panel will be needed to resolve differences. Meanwhile a Senate panel advanced a Tempe district merger bill, aiming to ease consolidation rules for Tempe area districts to cut costs and improve K 12 transitions. The merger measure lowers voter prerequisite petitions and awaits final Senate action.

Welfare reform bill limits on aid to families with dependents

The measure passed 11-3 in committee and would cap welfare recipients at 24 months in any five year span with exceptions. It would seek federal authorization for state time limits, reallocate 1.4 million to Job Service, and pursue a 2.8 million federal match to aid the program. Senators Salmon Chesley and Huppenthal dissented. The plan includes an Employment Demonstration Project funded at 200 thousand and targeted in select areas, while some benefits may continue if earnings fall short of the maximum welfare amount. All three bills await final Senate approval.
