Initiatives seek to end Town Center district and tax vote rules
Two ballot measures filed Tuesday aim to rescind the Mesa Town Center special improvement district and require voter approval for any tax increase. The move, led by the People’s Choice Initiative Committee, seeks a public vote on future taxes and on creation of special districts. If signatures succeed, a special election could occur. organizers target the Nov. 8 state general ballot.

Police report details three local crime incidents in Mesa and Scottsdale
A 15-year-old boy was molested after being pulled into a vacant Mesa lot by a man in his 40s. A separate assault at a Mesa bus stop involved a 20-year-old woman being grabbed from behind and restrained until the assailant fled toward a hotel. Scottsdale police reported two gun thefts from homes around New Year’s Eve, totaling five weapons in one case and six in another, plus additional items stolen worth thousands.

Valley Lutheran unveils expanded Emergency Dept in Mesa
Valley Lutheran Hospital in east Mesa celebrated its 10th birthday with a new expanded Emergency Department and a Fast Track program. Administrator Robert Rundio noted rising monthly and daily visit records as the hospital serves Apache Junction Gilbert Queen Creek and Superior. Randie said Fast Track targets minor injuries and earaches to speed care during busy evenings and weekends while serious cases go to the ER. The hospital opened January 4 1984 and the ED expansion follows earlier growth including two extra floors in 1990 bringing beds to 172.
