Census data show California’s population rising 1 percent to 31.2 million, while the U.S. grew 1.1 percent to 257.9 million. Immigrants fueled 894,000 of California’s growth, with births accounting for the rest. Nevada led growth nationally at 3.9 percent, and Connecticut and Rhode Island lost residents. Newcomers tend to be younger and may leave for healthier economies elsewhere.

Loch Ness sturgeon blamed for Nessie sightings admits dull truth
Adrian Shine of the Loch Ness Project argues eyewitness reports of Nessie can stem from sturgeon migrating into the loch. He notes a 14-paper study finds Loch Ness fish stocks sparse to 20-30 tons and suggests a sea monster would weigh 400-500 pounds at most, unlikely to be a dinosaur. The research also uncovers well layered sediments offering a historical record and a mysterious midwater “mystery layer” of small schools near 100 feet depth.
