Violence in Hebron as Jews and Palestinians clash
In Hebron on the West Bank, Jewish settlers and Palestinian youths clashed leaving four Palestinians wounded. The violence comes as Israel prepares to begin transferring control of the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank to the PLO. The incident raises fears of delaying the autonomy transition as death toll climbs to 34 Palestinians and 11 Israelis since the Sept. 13 accord. Secretary of State Warren Christopher heads to the region for a weeklong push to salvage the peace process. Rabin rejected U S intervention on the autonomy plan. Hebron is not in the first phase of handover despite its fragility as a religious site.
