Mixed Race Prom Sparks School Controversy
About 50 couples attended the Bap scannel prom Saturday night as 20 police officers stood by. Vonda Bowen, a 16 year old mixed race student central to the dispute, questioned dating plans amid talk of canceling the event over interracial attendance. Supporters say remarks were taken out of context and reflect student fights. The 680 pupil school tallies 422 white and 258 black students in a county of 76 percent white and 24 percent black. The prom was ultimately barred and the theme remained a surprise.
