Isomedix seeks FDA nod to irradiate red meat with gamma rays
Isomedix Inc of Whippany New Jersey plans to ask the FDA to approve irradiation using cobalt-60 to kill bacteria on beef and extend shelf life. If filed soon, approval could come by year end but rules and consumer acceptance must follow, with guidelines from Agriculture Department next spring at earliest. The move follows a 1990 FDA approval for poultry and a 1993 industry shift toward safer meat handling, spurred by a hamburger related poisoning outbreak. Isomedix operates nine U S plants and one in Canada and will run trial programs before broader market testing.
