Arizona Governor Murphy Reports Territory Population and Reforms
The annual report to the interior secretary states Arizona’s population near 109000 and praises social conditions. It notes volunteers for the war, the El Caney flag, and relative peace with the Apache. Recommendations include statehood, land grants, Whipple Barracks reestablishment, artesian wells funding, ethnological research, higher federal judges salaries, governors and secretaries pay, and territorial legislature pay increases.

Move to Establish Independent Fire System Discussed by Merchants
Monday evening a group of businessmen met at the school house to spur a fire protection plan. They favored an independent system with water tanks on the hill and a six inch main through the town funded by a 50 percent water tax until the Copper company is paid, warning Jerome could lose insurance if not done.

Copper Queen hires Sirius for West Point excursion
The Copper Queen company invited the Rough Riders to an excursion up the Hudson aboard the Sirius on September 16. They were greeted by the commandant at West Point and spent a couple hours viewing the sights. A brass band accompanied the boat and dinner followed on the return to New York.

Sunset Limited to Start November First
The Southern Pacific will run the Sunset Limited from Chicago to the Pacific Coast starting about November 1, then twice weekly with a solid vestibuled Pullman coach set and dining service. A second weekly fast train will run between New Orleans and San Francisco linking with Atlantic Coast trains, plus four weekly east-west runs from Maricopa via the Sunset route.
