The Mesa Free Press reports Arizona now has Governor McCord with H. Axers securing the Territory Secretaryship. The piece notes rivalries, phrases about Penrose and Dunlap, and mentions H. J. Washington May 19. President McKinley sent to the Senate the name of M H McCord of Phoenix for Governor of Arizona with C H Akers of Prescott as Secretary of the Territory and H J Cleveland for Sacaton Indian Agency. Opposition arose among Arizona candidates but failed to derail the nominations.
The Gazette Special notes McCord is regarded as of good character and ability, with four weeks since decision to send his name to the Senate for Governor. Three gentlemen will be confirmed at once, and there is no opposition. McCord will tour Washington briefly before heading to Arizona. Senator Spooner expects an approving Senate vote.
On May 10 the Yuma Water and Light Company grove yielded the first ripe apricots from the mesa area near the village. Manager H W Blaisdell reports several small shipments in the week. In the city, George Puassey’s home trees produced ripe fruit on the 6th, sparking pride at Mesa’s early ripening.
Arizona territory documents reveal AJ Chandler C L Atkins and H S Peterson forming Mesa Hay and Grain Company in Maricopa County to buy and sell hay grain alfalfa and to engage in threshing bales and real estate dealings. Capital stock fixed at $10000, board of three, duration twenty five years, officers to be stockholders. personal liability exempt from corporate debts.
A notary public A P Shew Dan acknowledges that the undersigned executed the instrument for its stated purpose and consideration. The act was performed on the 7th day of May in the year 1897, with the seal and official hand of the notary. Commission expiration noted as June 1, 1893.
