Lincoln as a Peddler on the Indiana to Illinois Move
AGossip in Gentryville recalls Abraham Lincoln trading as a peddler during the move from Indiana to Illinois. Captain William Jones recalls Lincoln investing about thirty dollars in notions before departing, buying knives and forks and domestic goods, and later doubling his money selling them along the route. Lincoln later wrote, from Decatur, that he had doubled his proceeds, though the letter itself was not kept.
