The New Railroad to Phoenix and Arizona Trade Fears

The San Diego World reports the Santa Fe Prescott & Phoenix line nearing completion from Ash Fork to Phoenix with about 1500 laborers laying track daily. The piece argues San Diego must attract the line’s 1500 workers to its harbor to become Arizona’s distribution point, warning delays threaten losing traffic to Guaymas and urging immediate action by investors Marshall Field, N. K. Fairbank and Norman B. Ream. It also notes economic trends from agriculture, horse industry, and tenant farming across New England states and Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and discusses orange production and cattle breeding.

New Head Gate Of Consolidated Canal Near Mesa

A massive rock head gate eight miles northeast of Mesa guards the canal with ten granite gates and 36 foot foundation sills. Engineer Davidson designed the gates and Engineer Code oversaw stonework using Mt. McDowell sandstone. The structure withstood twenty feet of flood during recent high water and includes a rip rap bulkhead and a zanjero's cottage linked by telephony to the valley. Irrigation expansion sparks farming along the Salt River basin as Detroit investors led by Dr Ai J Chandler push reclamation toward the Gila.
