Washington reports expect President McKinley to urge a larger standing army and liberal wartime appropriations in his December message. He plans to base calls on war results and Gen Miles’s recommendation to raise forces to at least 100,000, with navy gains warranting generous support. On Monday morning the town gathered at the high school to begin the new term. About 400 of 35 pupils in the district were present amid crowded rooms. Fifth grade classes secured at the Baptist church under Prof. J. E. Boas while Prof. W. M. Wear and Migs Feazel oversee upper grades. Miss Nora Dagg handles second and third grades, and Miss Annie Ned returns to lead the primary department. Despite favorable start, crowding remains the only drawback as construction continues at new store sites on Martin Avenue.
