Robert Gillham Dead Great civil engineer and street railways promoter

Robert Gillham, a noted civil engineer who promoted street railway projects, has died. His long career included leading transportation work and advancing urban rail ideas.

Memorial Mass for Robert Gillham Honors City Rail Pioneer

Robert Gillham died in Kansas City at age 70 from pneumonia and appendicitis after a six day illness. He built Kansas Citys street railway system and engineered rail networks across the West. A memorial mass meeting was called by Mayor Jones, and Pittsburg Gulf trains paused during the funeral. Gillham chaired major public rail projects and led the road as general manager earning about $15,000 yearly. He was born September 9, 1854 in New York and moved to Kansas City in 1878 to address the cities street railway needs.

Engineer Gets Milestone Salaries Across Cities

A text fragment notes a man being hired at 10,000 a year and soon employed by Denver and Omaha to design street railway systems. He drew 10,000 from each city and rapidly earned from 40,000 to 60,000 annually, the highest salary Kansas City ever recorded.

Knights of the Royal Arch Social Gathering

Sunday afternoon a Knights of the Royal Arch group met at Chas. Steinmits home in the west part of the city with friends for a social gathering. Col. J. G. Byers spoke on the order's purpose to fill a need left by other benevolent societies and to oppose saloon influence, noting it is not a whisky organization and welcomes those not affiliated elsewhere. Mena Lodge No. 4, organized August 22, 1809, has about thirty members and meets regularly. Luncheon at 4 p m followed a pleasant afternoon.

Churches Sunday Services and Community Church News

Sunday meetings at the First Christian church were well attended with several members joining including Brother Beeke and his family. Rev J K Walling is praised for his work in Mena and parishioners are urged to support him. At the Methodist service the day centered on Judas and a memorial Sunday upcoming for old soldiers. Three new members joined at morning service and an Epworth League devotion led by W Z McKean. Rev W W Gardner from Arkadelphia spoke in morning and evening services promoting the Baptist Orphans Home in Monticello. The Hartman children were placed with the Home and the morning collection exceeded thirty dollars for homeless children.

Hendrix Academy Bids Sought for Mena Arkansas

Sealed bids to build a brick schoolhouse and a frame principal's house for the Mena Hendrix Academy will be opened at 1 p.m. May 26. Separate bids may be made for each structure with plans at the offices of Jos P Landes in Mena and Geo Mathews in Kansas City. Proposals require a $25 bid bond and completion by September 16, 1899. The right to reject any bid is reserved.
