City council adopts speed of park improvements and passes several ordinances
The city council met in a Monday night session with most members present. They authorized spring park improvements not to exceed 100 dollars and advanced multiple ordinances including prohibiting gaming in saloons, banning ball play on streets, regulating sidewalks, and sanitary measures. F P Sunday resigned. J W Tow was elected nightwatch. F W Jaques joined the board of health. Lunch counter and related stalls in Janssen park were granted exclusive Fourth of July rights.

Col S W Fordyce receiver and W E Green Assistant Superintendent arrived by a special carrying two cars at 10 30 a m from the south and stayed about 20 minutes. Friendly greetings were exchanged with leading citizens as Fordyce spoke of plans to tour the road by daylight and reach Neosho tonight. He said an independent Little Rock to Hot Springs line is assured and Hot Springs to Mena will be built. he regretted not seeing Mena.

City Interferes: Saloon Sunday liquor sale case
A Monday morning complaint before Mayor Hamilton targets McIntosh & Davis for keeping their saloon open and selling liquor on Sunday. Bartender Tom Bowman admits selling whiskey to one man and is fined ten dollars while McIntosh & Davis face prosecution as records show the bartender acted against proprietor orders. Davis was out of town but McIntosh was present most of the day.

Mining deal anchors claims near Jake Kishmire
Engineer and ex Councilman John Paul and fireman John L. Sullivan bought a one third interest in four mining claims near Jake Kishmire through Durham and Batson mining exchange. Paul tested ore with a fire pot, reporting small nuggets and gold streaks in melted rock. Sullivan, experienced at Argentine smelting works, aided the test. The pair plan immediate development asserting a promising gold bearing rock.

Big Show Day in Mena Falls Short of Hype
A Lemon Brothers circus attracted a large local crowd despite threatening weather. The day featured a decent menagerie and a strong afternoon act but overall the show did not meet expectations. A swindling game led to about $250 to $300 lost. Sheriff Johnson raided the tent and detained several suspects, but victims could not identify them. The city license reportedly priced too high, canceling the evening performance.

Hotel Mena to Enter New Management Under E M Green
Tomorrow the Hotel Mena will change proprietors and come under the management of Mr. E. M. Green, a well known local business man. Mr. Shinn parts with the lease to join the maintenance of way office. The hotel will be improved and kept as a first class two dollar a day establishment under Green, who has long been associated with the Gayle House in central Kentucky.
