Fatal Wreck Claims Two Railroad Workers
Engineer Lowe and Fireman Kirkham were on the engine when it left the track and suffered fatal injuries. Lowe died shortly after. Kirkham lay near death. Lowe’s family resided in Pittsburg while Kirkham’s wife, staying at the Mountain Inn, was given a special train to reach him. Each man carried just over $1,000 in insurance. Kirkham was well known in Mena among railroad workers.

Rail wreck delays northbound train after washout near Stilwell
At about 4 am the special carrying Mr. de Goeijen and party returning to Kansas City ran into a washout near Westville beyond Stilwell, derailing the engine and forward coach while the sleeper stayed on track. The accident delayed the northbound train by about 12 hours.

Foreign Party Visits Mena Train Tour Prospects Grow
A special northern arriving train of one dining car and one Pullman stopped in Mena for an hour and a half. Led by F A Hornbeck land commissioner, the group of foreigners toured local business and residences, expressing optimism about Mena’s future while J de Goeijen Jr pledged books for the Woman’s Literary club and arranged to place a Queen of Holland portrait at Mt. Mena Inn. E Van Essen and H de Goeijen bought two city lots each for homes. The party continued south toward the Gulf.
