The Park Fair and anniversary celebration August 18 19 1999 in Mena offers premium awards from local businesses for exhibits. Cash prizes range from 25 cents to 5 dollars for farm produce crafts and livestock with many sponsors including Lang Shang chickens field corn home spun pants wine honey and assorted goods. Cherry Fruit Farms to be Enlarged at Mena and Acorn

Successful fruit growers Mr P H Cherry and Mrs Cherry plan to lay off and plat part of their Mena Acorn farm for sale of lots while expanding acreage. Knight from New York will manage, trials with Rocky Ford melons show promise, and output goals include 25 more acres for goose berries plums and cherries. Current 24 acres of berries yielded 1030 cash this season with 55 cases of strawberries bringing 825 after costs. They also ship to Cripple Creek and expect to grow cantaloupes and tomatoes for northern shipment. the Cherrys leave for Webster Grove Mo tomorrow.

Death of Miss Susie Compere in Dallas

Miss Susie Compere, age nineteen, died of pneumonia after a sixteen day illness at her sister Mrs. W. M. Pipkin in Dallas. She was daughter of Mrs. J. S. Compere and sister of Rev. W. L. Compere. She taught in county public schools and was active in the Baptist church. Funeral at the Baptist church and burial in White Oak cemetery.

Damages Sought in Suit Against Pittsburg & Gulf Railroad

J. L Alley filed a damage suit in circuit court seeking $2000 for personal injuries to J. W. Sams. The injury occurred last fall in the company yards when Sams was at work, and the suit alleges damages for the thigh injury.

Rogers Band Secured for August Park Fair

Mayor Hamilton as execution committee has secured the Rogers band of Rogers Arkansas for the two day celebration park fair to be held here August 14 and 19. He also reports arrangements are under way to secure one or perhaps two other bands for this occasion.

Indian Robbed by a Negro at Pittsburg Depot Park

At about 1 45 last night an Indian from Spiro was knocked in the head and robbed by a negro hired to carry his parcels from the Frisco depot to the Pittsburg and Gulf depot at the park opposite the Pittsburg and Gulf.

M E Pumphrey of the Kansas City Meat Market shipped 250 head of sheep to the Kansas City markets. Mr Pumphrey bought the sheep for this vicinity.
