Drill Club Formed for Sham Battle with Red Men

A Thursday meeting organized a drill club in Illinois with about thirty members. J D Jones chaired, G B Doles served as secretary, and a three person committee was set to draft bylaws. The group planned drills 7 to 5 in a park and a sham battle with the Red Men, including a staged ambush and assaults on a beleaguered coach.

Water Works Bids For Mena Improvement District No 3

Water works commission of Mena district opened bids Saturday at the K P hall for the new system. Bids included cast iron pipes and spiral wrought steel pipes from CG A Reese Frank Schifold Gorman and Steele and E N Maxwell. Prices ranged from about 19 813 to 23 725 dollars with timelines from sixty days to seven months. Commission adjourned for a hour trying to decide best bid and pipe type.

Business Block to Rise in Mena Texas Says Weld Purchaser

Mr GN Lockridge of Vanaistine Texas has bought Weld at the corner of Mena street and Honert avenue and plans a brick 265 by 100 foot front with plate glass. He will let contracts before returning to Texas to begin by October 1 and will stock $10,000 in foods. He has studied Mena, visited his brother-in-law William Scroggins, and expects robust growth and solid business standing. The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen men plan their second annual ball at Jatseen parl Pavilion on July 27 with 20 tickets sold and a possible special Pittsburg train for attendees, aiming for a grand public event.

Improvements at Ice Plant in Mena Expand Ice Output

The Mena Ice & Cold Storage Co. runs at full capacity shipping ice along the Horatio to Poteau line. Four carloads have been shipped this month. improvements include a 265 foot blow pipe for shavings from local mills to fuel the furnace and a 30 by 60 foot barn for delivery teams. The well is 22 feet deep with 16 feet of water, and 300 feet of hose with a force pump will project water 200 feet.

To Let Mail Contracts In Sedalia

Mr. C. C. Palmer has joined J. D. Franklin & Co United States mail contractors at Sedalia Missouri. He will let contracts for carrying mail through the country and leaves today for Redland to oversee a contract there. The Star wishes him success in this new role.

Willis and Latimer Wed In Texarkana Nuptials

T. O. Willis of Texarkana and Miss Marie M. Latimer of Mena wed at 10 30 this morning at the parsonage with Rev J Greene officiating. They boarded the southbound train for a brief stay in Atlanta Tex and will be at home in Texarkana after August 1. Latimer is the daughter of S M Latimer of this place and Willis is a contractor and respected business man.

A special two car train carried General Manager J. A. Edson General Superintendent W. E. Green Superintendent of Motive Power F. Mertsheimer Resident Engineer A. B. Rust and General Roadmaster O. H. Crittenden on an inspection trip south Saturday morning stopping near the round house and yards likely to consider improvements.

Grade stakes unloaded for railway work at local yard expansion

A large lot of grade stakes enough for five miles of railroad track was unloaded Tuesday. They were consigned to Resident Engineer A. F. Rust. With Rust away, the Star cannot confirm their exact use, but they are believed to be for the yard enlargement project at this location.

Detroit adopts three cent fares on street railways and Gov. Pingree moves to secure a special legislature session to push municipal ownership. He issues a proclamation urging support against opponents of the plan as the council gears to franchise ordinance passage.

Ultimatum in packing house dispute reached soon

Kansas City July 15 an understanding between Schwarzschild Sulzberger and the butchers union may come soon. The firm issued an ultimatum allowing the union committee a reasonable time to persuade men to accept terms and notify the company of acceptance. If no action is taken after the period an additional 24 hours will be given to dismiss offending members or the house will be opened like other packing houses.
