Orphanage Fire Kills Four In Sparkill Convent
A blaze at St Agnes convent and orphanage in Sparkill destroys nine of ten buildings. Four residents die including Helen Brown Emma Mackin and Mary Kate McCarthy. Two girls are missing, 26 children injured and 400 residents escaped thanks to heroism of sisters. Fire began in lavatory and spread through dormitories prompting dramatic rescues including Sister Agnes jumping from a fourth floor window. An 15 year old boy John Cody carried two missing infants to safety. The disaster raises loss to about 150000 dollars with extensive damage. In separate note W G Brim is named general manager of several railroads in Quincy.
