A Jump for His Life on a Railroad Trestle

John Pearson bridgeman for the Pittsburg and Gulf Railway had a dream vision of a train and foreman ordering him to jump. He awoke injured on the Clark hotel walk with a broken left shoulder and a bone near the elbow after being found by late guests. He plans hospital treatment in Kansas City.

At Mount Mena Colonel Landes reports Wilhelmina hotel thriving as a popular summer resort. GM Balloon and A. J. Dean run the hotel smoothly for 150 guests Sunday, with visitors from Hamburg, Lyon, Boston, Chicago, Shreveport, Texarkana, Joplin and Fort Smith among others.

An Enjoyable Affair at Nob Hill House Party

Miss Feane Johnson hosted a Monday gathering at her parents home on Nob Hill honoring Miss Minnie Prince of Texarkana. The social list included Judge John S. Kelly and wife Judge Matheny and wife Hon J D Shaver and wife and others. Prizes were awarded for cards and the event featured refreshments music dancing to the Roger de Coverly and a string band on the lawn. The reporter noted elegant attire and praised the beauty of the attendees with Miss Prince and others among the notable guests.

An old fiddler contest offers 8 percent prize for first and 3 percent for second best, with at least five entries and free entry. A traveling correspondent notes prosperity where land is well tilled and corn thrives, contrasts mulberry patches, and highlights a 29 year old apple tree yielding 25 bushels. At Black Springs crops are poor after rain. cotton ginning totals reach 400 bales, with 300 sent to Mena, while trade shows dry goods cheaper in Hot Springs and groceries cheaper in Mena.

Copper Bearing Ore Found In Mountain Tunnel Near Smelter

W J Boyer and HM Radcliffe driving a mountain tunnel near the smelter struck a promising copper bearing ore at 57 feet. An assay showed copper with a trace of gold, testing 2 and 57 100 percent copper with gold. The tunnel at 68 feet yielded more copper than any county prospect yet assayed. Prof Soest confirmed the ore content and value around ten dollars per ton in copper and up to two dollars in gold per ton. Work will continue, with optimism the deeper the tunnel goes will improve results.

City Wells Progress On Water Works Wells

Work continues on the big wells for the water works system. The first well reaches about fifteen feet, the second six feet, both holding water. A boiler and machinery are installed to pump water as digging proceeds. About fifteen men are employed at the wells.

Mrs Elizabeth Baker died yesterday at her Rockey home aged sixty nine. An old Polk county resident for fifty years she leaves three children. Her son Robert lives in Texarkana, another son John and daughter Rebecca stay in Rockey. Funeral services were held at 1 pm today conducted by Rev J W Beds

The Morning Glories Entertain at Savage Hall

The Society of Little Morning Glories wore their best evening attire for a pleasing social at Savage Hall on Monday night. The program featured music and recitations, with first class refreshments. Dr. M. A. Simmons Liver Medicine is advertised as aiding digestion and removing impurities.

A Killing at Cove Ended in Fatal Firearm Standoff

A traveling man from Cove reports that at the Cove tavern landlord Durham shot and killed a young man who had been staying there after a heeded slander dispute involving Durham’s fourteen year old daughter. Durham warned the man to leave within hours or be killed. The sheriff was notified to bring a coroner, but details are scarce.

At the mayor's office meeting the committee of arrangements and allied committees set the August 18 and 19 anniversary and park fair program. The Mena band will be retained and the Rogers band has been secured for musical duties.

Obituary notice for George A. Clark of Hamilton roots and local lodge ties

At Rest, Mr. George A. Clark, long ill, died at 5:30 AM. Born 1849 in Hamilton Ontario, he married Mary Lockhart in 1880 at Mitchell Dakota. He ran a grocery business in Mitchell, later managed the Clark hotel. A Presbyterian deacon and Mason, burial under lodge auspices. Survived by wife and three daughters. Funeral at residence at 4 PM, interment in White Oak cemetery.
