YMCA Fund Sails Toward District Objective in Melfort

The Melfort district YMCA campaign aims to raise 5000 with gatherings across Birch Hills to the Manitoba boundary. Contributions come from Melfort town and surrounding areas including Tisdale and Star City, with many local residents and groups pledging varied amounts.

Mother's Day Observed At St James Church

The Presbyterian Sunday School observed Mother's Day last Sunday in the church. A large number of mothers attended as the school presented a program including readings hymns prayers and recitations by Junior and Infant classes and individual performers.

Beatty Church Addresses Draw Large Local Audience

The Beatty Church in Melfort was packed Sunday for youth addresses led by Rev. Tanton. Nearby Kinistine hosted services by Mr. Gilbart, while local plans include a May 21 social and a moving picture show on May 17 and 18.

Pleasant Valley Red Cross Meeting Plans June Fundraiser

The Pleasant Valley shore branch met at Mrs. Chas. Stewart's home on May 10 with many members present. They organized quilt making for a sale and dance set for June 7 in the Orange hall and welcomed new member Mrs. Kirkhope. Donations and memberships were reported including 25 from Mrs. Reynolds lifemembership gift and 95 from Mrs Redman, with 5.40 for lunches and 200 membership fee from Mrs. Kirkhope.

Meetings of the Rural Councils at Star City May 7 1918

Minutes show Reeve J F Young and councilors approving last minutes and approving seed grain for Percy Godson and George Slade. Payments include 300 to George Smylie for road diversion and 40 to Andrew Holmes for 2 acres road work. Committee appointments and road projects discussed with Highways plan approval and building purchases. Meeting adjourned to January 4 1918 in Star City.

Red Cross Tea Room at Melfort Nets Small Profit

Mrs Hatton led the tea room on Thursday with help from Mrs Elliott and the Misses Johnston and Streadwick. Donations came from Mesdames Stewart Young Hatton Atkinson and Mr Hughes, totaling 11.75. Boys Signing Pledges In Teen Age Campaign

In Melfort the YMCA Teen Age Earn and Give Campaign offers prizes to boys collecting the most pledges. A $1435 baseball outfit from G B Jameson is slated for the winning team, drawn from local public and high schools. The regular Pleasantdale council met at A. D. Youngs on May 1 1918 with Reeve McAlister and councillors Misfeldt Rade Erwin Anderson Parkinson and Graham present. Pie Mac Donald Speaks at Gaiety Hall Star City

Large crowds attended in Star City on Friday May 10 as Pie Mac Donald of Winnipeg, a returned soldier and escaped prisoner, shared thrilling memories from Moenster prison camp. He praised Red Cross aid sending food parcels and clothing to prisoners, noting survival depended on that support. Mr J A Macdonald officiated as the chorus and schoolchildren provided song.

Dobson Home Narrow Escape From Fire

The A Dobson residence at Pleasant Valley escaped total loss early Sunday as a summer kitchen connected to the main kitchen caught fire. R Kellett of Melfort barely escaped, Chap pie fled through a window, and a water tank helped confine the blaze. Loss estimated 400 to 500 dollars, insured.

Wounded Pte Alfred Jeffries In Norfolk War Hospital

Word reaches Twickenham that Private Alfred Jeffries of the Highlanders was wounded in the right thigh on April 28 and is now at Norfolk War Hospital in England. Sepper Jeffries, father, is in Moose Jaw military hospital after sailing to Canada on April 6. Wheat harvests near complete. district suffers from bush fires. Chas Ferestrom Sr. returns home for the summer. William Arnold reports activity on his farm, breaking twelve acres.

Pte MacDonald Tells Of Horrors In Prison Camp

The town hall heard Pte Frank O MacDonald recount his capture at Sandusty Wood and escape after three attempts.
