A blaze Thursday evening destroyed the Melfort Creamery Co plant, with only the engine room spared. Firefighters faced hydrant distance challenges, using 1500 feet of hose to battle one water stream. Loss estimated at $6000 to $7000, insured. Crowds gathered as residents reacted with shock and chaos.
The Hon W R Motherwell calls on all residents of Saskatchewan to observe Sunday June 30 as a day of public humiliation and prayer for the Allied war effort. Religious leaders urge sincere intercession, confession, and thanksgiving, with a townwide quiet hour observed to unite in the proclamation.
Beatty host welcomed a large crowd for a day of events including pony and potato races won by Mckay and Constance, broncho busting by Art Alexander, and a range 19 versus 20 baseball game won 12 to 9. Proceeds totaled about 160 dollars to Red Cross and Patriotic Society. A fifty dollar raffle aided Red Cross. local canvassers promoted subscriptions.
The Rural Municipality of Carrot River No 420 held a June 1918 meeting in the Municipal Hall Flett Springs. Reeve McLaren and six councillors were present. Communications from the Canada Food Board Man Power and other Departments were discussed including road surveys and a pile driver loan. Continued on inside page.
A heavy hail storm swept east from St. Brieux through Pleasantdale and Chagoonees to Bilver Park last Wednesday, wrecking crops and stripping trees. Hailstones near hen size covered fields four to six inches deep. Recovery prospects unclear.
Crowded All Saints church hosted the annual Masonic service with Rev C Barnes delivering a sermon on Ideals from Philippians 3 12 He urged Masons to live by God given ideals and contrasted character ideals with circumstantial happiness He linked Masonic and Christian values to purpose and mission and noted church extension work and upcoming Sunday services.
Returns of the Red Cross Drive in Melfort show $9,135 collected to date with several districts still outstanding. Officials anticipate the final total may reach about $10,000 as more contributors offer to add their share.
Norwood Red Cross reports its campaign target of 800 was reduced to 350 with a list of contributors including Bernard Young Starkey 2500 and W Smylie 500 among others. Campbellville Red Cross notes they raised 100 more than the allotment and lists donors such as A Uvenue and Mra T Bell.
Star City Red Cross completes campaign returns with over $1600 expected. Mrs N Haskell led Saturday tea rooms aided by Mesdames Hackett Jens Healey and the Misses Healey and Daisy Collison. Tea donations plus a $24 dance proceeds plan to fund the drive as growers’ proceeds from the June 12 event. Mr Keddy of Melfort donated auction services.
Donors listed include Mesdames Tarrant McCreadie Lundy Atkinson Groban and Mr Hughes. proceeds total 34 with 23.75 from Mrs Haney for Contrepico tickets. Work room run by Mrs Clarke assisted by Mesdames Lee Slim Tarrant Perry Johnston Mays McIntosh and McKercher. Lamps and curtains to be sold. viewing at the Armory each Thursday. Mrs W H Jameson takes charge next week.
Local Orangemen ruled to celebrate the Glorious Twelfth in Melfort with a forenoon meeting at the town hall and a sports program at the fairgrounds in the afternoon. Speakers from outside areas expected. district lodges to attend. details to follow.
At Willowdale parsonage on June 1 Rev J M Austin presided as Thos W Jackson of Star City wed Emma M Hillier of Pathlow. Ethel Evans of Melfort married William Reeves of Nipawin with Rev W R Tanton officiating. Stephenson Moore nuptials held with Roy Moores and Mina Stephenson amid modest ceremony. The couple will reside in Pleasant Valley with best wishes from hosts. A local property deal sees A Monsyes purchasing the Smart block from Northern Trust Co for occupation in Melfort with two storeys brick and a cement basement. plans to rent top-floor suites.
Meetings discuss 1918 Public Revenue Tax issues with Jacob Getz and N A Nelson. Reeve and Burton to inspect disputed road 7-49-17. secretary to notify Agriculture Dept about weed inspector lack. Outstanding cheques to Nelson cancelled. grants for road work approved. Council adjourns to Monday July 6.
A series of special meetings organized by the Saskatchewan Grain Growers Association led by Carlton director A Baynton runs July 1 to July 11 starting Rosthern. Attending are A Hawkes J L Rooke MP Andrew Knox and H H McKinney with a major rally planned at Kivistino on July 4 and a town hall meeting at Melfort July 6 at 2 PM.
A shareholders meeting in Melfort discussed rebuilding the plant destroyed by fire and forming a combined creamery and cold storage facility. L O Wirtz of Wadena noted labor and material costs, with $40 000 to $45 000 in stock to be raised locally. A temporary plant will operate in Burrows Avenue while permanent connections are added.
