Melfort Hosts Seventh Annual Curling Bonspiel

The seventh annual bonspiel opened in Melfort at the municipal arena with sixteen rinks in play, twelve local and four visiting, amid weather ideal for ice. Points of contention arose over outside participation from Prince Albert and Saskatoon, as local teams recall past support and trophies won, while results from the first round list several matches and scores across teams including Melfort, Kinistino, and Pleas Valley.

Second Round Progress in Urand Challenge and Carrot River

Humphrey beat Wilcox 16 to 13 in the Urand Challenge and Mason defeated McEwen 17 to 16 in the Carrot River. Mansell of Melfort and Humphrey of Kinistino remain undefeated, with Thursday set to wind up the spiel. The Ladies Hospital Aid served lunches, receipts over 47 dollars.

Evangelistic campaign led by Rev. H. H. Gilbert ends in Melfort with a final rally Friday evening. Due to requests, Gilbert stays until Saturday morning before departing for a revisit on Thursday. The event was originally slated to close Tuesday.

Melfort Aviator Participates in Texas Flying Record

Gerald Murphy, training at a Texas aviation camp, completed his course and is en route home to his parents. He participated in a major flying contest near Fort Worth where a world record of 80 000 miles was accumulated in one day by 30 aircraft. The test produced crashes due to wind, yet showed average speeds near 60 mph and machines remaining aloft for ten to eleven hours.

High School Literary Society Session Ends With Not Guilty Verdict

The High School Literary Society held a business session in the third classroom. The jury deliberated briefly and returned a not guilty verdict. A social evening was planned for Tuesday the 12th.

Lambermen Convention Reports From Prince Albert

Robert Lamb returned Friday from Prince Albert where retail agents of North Canada Lumber Co gathered for a convention. Illumining addresses covered community spirit in selling homes and barns, proper ventilation for farm buildings, and banker credit viewpoints. A notable feature was an automobile trip to the Albert Lumber Co plant over 45 miles away.

Pleasantdale Red Cross Dance Yields Fund for Society

Pleasantdale Red Cross Society held its third dance at the school on Friday February 15. Four new members joined as the event raised more than 50 dollars from door receipts, cake sales, and donations. An auction of a copper red, white and blue cushion, donated by Mrs. Wilbert Flemming, netted about 40 dollars with Peter Stewart purchasing the item after multiple bids. The evening featured an excellent orchestra led by Mr. Clans with Archie Campbell and Dick Large.

Edward Goodfellow Rites Conducted In Melfort

Edward Goodfellow aged 44 who died February 23 is survived by a widow and two daughters Jean and Katie. Born in Prince Albert, he leaves four brothers and two sisters: William and J of Kinistino, Robert of Richard, East, Joseph of Saskatoon, George of Lloydminster, and Mrs Batman of Saskatoon. The funeral occurred Tuesday with a service at St James Presbyterian Church in Melfort led by Rev D Campbell, followed by interment at Mount Pleasant cemetery.

New Automobile Regulation Changes From Last Legislature

New rules affect vehicle registration plates and ownership notices. Drivers must transfer plates after selling a car and report new ownership to the provincial secretary. Two plates become mandatory in 1919, lights must be dimmed yet usable, and funeral processions require drivers to yield or stop. Right of way rules at intersections are clarified and dealer licensing expanded.

Mount Forest reports weekend visits by Mrs L McFadyen and Mrs 8 Dobson to their parents Mr and Mrs J Curtis. Miss M Maaker spent Sunday at home. A Red Cross social and dance at Mount Forest school raised funds, featuring a cushion donated by Mrs Rose of Melfort and a quilt drawing won by Robert McBain. Miss Leona Harms visited Miss Cora Gordon. George Curtis visited sister Ure H Dobson in Pressant Valley this week. Sympathy goes to Mrs E Goodfellow and daughters after a bereavement. Mrs 8 Dafoe visited her parents for a few days.

Lost River Man Nearly Frozen To Death

W Wenger a Lost River settler slipped while skiing the Saskatchewan northern bank and broke his knee. He lay helpless until sunset, crawled to his gun and fired several shots. Barton family and two friends rescued him, warming him by a campfire before moving him to Mr Barton's home. Frostbite and knee injury described.

Farmers Called To Inspect Machinery During March Week

A nationwide farm implement inspection and repair week is set for March 11 to 16. The program urges farmers to inspect machinery, order repairs or parts, and overhaul equipment while ensuring seed supplies and productive output. Newspapers will host a farm implement exchange in want ads to help source second hand machinery.

The Pleasantdale Red Cross met in the school on Friday February 1. Members logged repairs of two shirts and several pairs of socks for Mesddémes Palmer MecElveen Graham and Coulter. Local Rinks Dominate Prince Albert Bonspiel for Melfort

Melfort rinks attended the Prince Albert bonspiel last week and captured four of six events plus second in the Grand Aggregate. The record lists G A McEwen with F W Clift O J Pollock and Dr Pogue and other teams led by J Camberon J H Millard and Rex Beach. Final standings show Melfort strong through rounds with several close games and trophy wins including the Imperial Life trophy and Grand Challenge.
