Seed Fair At Melfort Attracts Small Crowd And Short Courses

The Melfort Agricultural Society held the sunnal seed fair and poultry exhibit in the town hall on February 7 8 and 9. Entries were few about six percent of total. Winners include J R Dickie Buster Lot Saskatoon winners and several Firsts in wheat barley potatoes geese and poultry. Short courses by the University of Saskatchewan ran concurrently with attendance down from two years ago but some participants listened to instructive talks on poultry beef cattle and tillage work.

Star City presents an Irish style concert on March 14 at the Gaiety to aid the Roman Catholic Church. A high class program features Prince Albert Melfort and local talent with the Star City orchestra in attendance.

Funeral for Aaron Scntt Held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery

A funeral for Aaron Scntt, aged 77, is scheduled today at 11 a.m. from the family home in Mount Pleasant cemetery. Inspector Kerr, from Raina, conducted an official inspection of the Scenic theatre yesterday, finding it compliant with Dominion and Provincial regulations.

Beatty Social Klub Plans Dances and Events

Massey Harris Co Opens Central Warehouse in Melfort

The Massey Harris Company converts the Gerow building on Barrows Avenue as it opens a central warehouse in Melfort. Ramsay will relocate to town to manage the operation while G Brown, Prices Alene headline manager, moves to Melfort to lead the business. Melfort becomes district headquarters and distribution hub.

Mount Forest School Grade Reports Show Varied Scores

The Mount Forest School records list Grade VI students Ernest Curtis four and Eben Ice berg sixty eight, Grade V records Bergliot Odegard eighty four and Mary Curtis seven, Grade IV students Karie Odegard seventy nine and Charlie Gordon seventy nine with absences noted for Martha QOdegard and Harold Stobl. Grade II Iceberg France displays one hundred for Mary Curtis seven, and Grade I Frans Johnson one hundred. Attendance noted at 1.10 percent with Edith M. Minaker teaching.

Star City Red Cross Tea Recap At Red Grass Room

Saturday event hosted by Altar Society members in Star City raised 14.75 dollars. A Star City branch meeting on the following Saturday reported donations totaling 496.72 dollars. Melfort Boospiel Arrangements Near Completion

Melfort prepares for its tenth annual boospiel with $30000 raised for prizes and cash. The event runs February 24 to March 1, using seven sheets of ice. Competitors will vie in five events as rinks travel from Pithlow Tisdale Kinistine Bireh Hille Prince Albert and Saskatoon.

Former Melfort Boy Dies On West Front

News arrives of the death in action on the west front of Douglas Miles formerly with the Bank of Commerce staff in Melfort. He came from Boginodome ten years ago with Reg Beatty, worked on his farm, then joined the bank and showed marked ability. Enlisted at Red Deer early in the war and soon after received a commission. A splendid shot and sportsman, he likely did brave work. no details yet received.

Red Cross Sewing Drive Noted at Pleasantdale

Mesdames Mansell, Graham, and Atkin led the effort with Misses Hawke and Jameson guiding volunteers. South Melfort Red Cross Monthly Meeting Report

The South Melfort Red Cross held its regular meeting at the home of Mr and Mrs Philip Crampton with good attendance. Raffle tickets were raffled by several members and tea served by Mrs Crampton assisted by Irene and Victoria Dykstra, producing four dollars. Next meeting slated for Mrs John Cowie’s home on March 6.

Mellort Girl Receives Royal Red Cross For Front Service

A Mellort woman earned the Royal Red Cross for service abroad since the war began. She served at Setov iti and in France, returned home on furlough in November, and resumed duty on January 4. Sister to Messrs Walter, Jacob, and George Attrill, she left war souvenirs on display at the Central Drug Store window.

Rural Telephone Sets Agenda for Unified Management

A joint meeting of Rural Telephone Companies centered at Melfort convened in the council chambers Saturday to discuss consolidating management. Attendees included Naisberry Keral, Flett Springs Rural, Beatty Barsl, Mount Forest Rural, and South Melfort Rural. Thos Cookerel chaired, Jan Rutledge served as secretary, with a focus on improving service.

Farm Land Deals Surge in Local District

Several important deals in farm lands have been completed in the district. Wm Sproole bought the SE 2t and N for SW 24 45 go. cooting 240 acres from a Winnipeg firm. James Scott purchased the James Hatch farm northeast of town SW 1946 18. A Mr Rolf from Dakota bought the Higgin s farm about twelve miles northeast of town.

Court of Honor Impresses High School Students

The High School Literary Society held a Court of Honor session in the third class room on Friday February 8 with high tension and several related cases disposed of. Rev H Gilbart spoke on Tuesday February 6 earning vigorous applause. Lioyh from the College of Agriculture Saskatoon addressed students Friday on hog and poultry production. Margery Ramecy from Neskaton enrolled this week in the third class.

Several district residents visited Melfort on Saturday. Miss Hazel Curtis of Melfort stayed with her parents Sunday. Mrs. McLean visiting sister Sey Central. Farmers began building wood locally. Ed Goodfellow shows health improvement. A district dance occurred at E Carwardine’s Wednesday night. Miss May Mivaker visited parental home near Beatty. J A Curtis rode the Wednesday evening train to Star City, returning Thursday.

New Regulations For The Operation Of Steam Boilers

At the Inez seasion of the Provincial Legislature new rules require owners to register portable traction engine boilers with the Department and pay a five dollar annual license fee. A numbered license plate will be issued and must be displayed. after January 1 1918 no boiler may be used without it. Penalties range from ten to five thousand dollars for noncompliance. If the annual fee has already been paid, inspection will be free. Early registration is urged to avoid extra inspection and license charges.

Methodist Church Campaign Draws Large Audiences

Mr Gilbart drew a packed crowd at the Methodist church as he spoke on manhood and faith. Miss Queena Smith and Mr Mosher sang, Clift's Orchestra played, and Reginald Beatty led the meeting. Evening crowds filled the church with talks on Is It Easier To Go Up Or Go Down and Empire Builders of Tomorrow.

A child swallowed a ball bearing and experienced a lodged throat. A doctor performed a careful extraction with visible difficulty but successfully removed the object.
