Pupils must pass all subjects with at least half marks and ten percent of aggregate to gain honors. High schools may admit Grade THT work under principal recommendation, letting students move to junior form. At Melfort School 23 pupils saw 19 succeed, led by Percy Faulkner and Allan Aiken.
Edward Mann of Galt born, educated at Central School, served with the 17th Battery Sth Artillery Brigade. He died of wounds at No 6 Canadian Field Ambulance on April 24. He volunteered at Sewell Camp, served in England, fought in front lines, and was praised for marksmanship. Survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Mann and three brothers Herbert, Harold, and another. Memorial service held at Ainslie Street Methodist Church.
The Melfort management prepares for a large fair with Indian handiwork exhibit from Fort ala Corne and standard shows of stock, poultry, and farm produce. Events include harness racing for $75, baseball for $25, tug of war against Weldon RM, tandem and walking contests, baby show, and a sheaf blade competition. Carr Wardine will perform on the horizontal bar between acts. Admission ranges 10 to 25 cents with children under 10 free. details from president J Younghusband or secretary J A McMillan.
Harvey Gilmour Gilmour eight year old son of Rev H B Gilmour Kinistino died at Lady Minto Hospital after acute peritonitis from appendicitis. Funeral held Tuesday at Kinistino Presbyterian Church with Rev A M McColl delivering the address.
Rothwell edged Melfort 10 to 8 on a windy Saturday evening to dent Melfort’s title bid. The game swung with key innings as Rothwell built early lead, Melfort battled back twice, and Rothwell held on for the win behind pitchers Arnold Cantelo and strong fielding. Umpire Swurtz oversaw the tense finish.
All Saints Church schedules three services on Sunday August 6 with morning prayer and Holy Communion at 11 a m evening worship at 7 p m and a Sunday school and Bible class at 2 30 p m Rector to preach at both morning and evening services.
Evening service in south chapel at 7 o clock. Holiness Movement events begin at 3 o clock. Mid week prayer meeting set for Tuesday in south chapel at 7.80.
Local clergymen organized the Melfort Ministerial Association and extended invites to nearby ministers for a general meeting in Melfort on Paste August 7. Rev. W Taunton serves as convenor. Macintosh and Hyde are auditing town accounts while Principal Halligan has resigned and a new principal is sought.
Observations by Mr. Clift show rainfall of 11.195 inches in April and 5.105 inches in May, with total four month rainfall reported as 18.080 inches. The record notes quantities and urban rainfall totals for the period leading into July.
Preparations for a big Patriot ic Picnic next Friday August fourth commemorate the Great War's second anniversary. An automobile parade from the town hall leads to a 2 30 patriotic rally at the grounds with speakers including G B Johnston M L A Rev W R Tanton and Lieut Rev Strong. Activities include music by children sports for kids and a basket collection to cover expenses with Drummond Chapter I O DE handling catering.
Town Superintendent Donald MacLauchlan started work today on the Stovel street sewer extension to link the public school and hospital with the town system. About 2,500 feet of sewer will be laid and completion is expected in six weeks under day work with 15 to 20 men, improving disposal and ending reliance on a costly system.
G services will be held at the Methodist church on Sunday August 6. Morning sessions at 11 a m and 12 8 m include Bible class. Evening service at 7 p m features Rev B Bellingham preaching at both services.
The regular meeting at AD. Youngs on July 8 led by Reeve Stewart with Councillors Anderson Strothers Erwin Misfeldt Harris and Graham. Items include park bylaw readings and payments to local merchants, road work funding, ditch right of way, bridge permit, grants and sympathy note to E J Wrennick’s family. Wm. Coyle returned from visiting his brother Charlie in Minneapolis. Mrs. G. A. Mayhew and daughters Maw and Carrie of Detroit came home after weeks with her sister Mrs. W. L. Robson. Miss Ella Harris holidaying with Mrs. Archie McLean at Mount Forest. Miss Minnie Young back from Saskatoon. Billie Robson sold six head of cattle to Roy McLean of Platt Springs. Melfort crops look promising. warm weather and late cutting to Aug 2. Mrs. G. Johnston and Miss Frankie Johnston on a four month coast trip. Messrs. A. McMichael and I. A. (text incomplete).
Drillers on A B Atkinsons farm east of town struck a small crude oil pocket at 108 feet while drilling for water. Investigation suggests a Trenton shale like formation. Interest grows as geology terms spark talk of anticlines and regional oil potential.
Mrs Hatton hosted the Red Cross tea room last Thursday assisted by Mrs Wile Mrs Beatty Mrs Wood and Miss Ete. Donors named include Mesdames Purdy Griffiths and Miss Beatty and Miss Atkinson. Proceeds reached 6.15 with Mrs Wild in charge of the tea room alongside Mesdames Armstrong McIntosh Assaly Slon Laing Hawke Griffthe and Miss Assaly. Prizes included two pairs of socks bags and a Palmer prize. centre prize won by Gordon Towle with drawing number 182 by Mr Moore.
Rev J Slavin tendered his resignation as rabbi and left for Regina. B Broudy returns from Winnipeg after dissolving a partnership with B Freedman. A stock of goods is on its way from Winnipeg. Wicker visits Winnipeg. Recent rains marked local weather, with clouds and distant flashes. Mosquitoes and water concerns noted. Inspector Hatchindu of Judicial trains was a visitor in town. Mrs Leopold Stewart and children visit Forest district friends. Mr George Denton of Camp Hughes arrived for a short furlough. John Taylor reports erection in Mount Forest district. Beaver Lumber Co supplied materials.
