Constable Watson warns auto owners about license and plate rules issued by Regina authorities. Interim ten day licenses available at the Court Registrar to be displayed and later replaced, with full details required on the application.
The text describes required highway lighting to ensure safe operation. It states the light must enable the operator to see persons, vehicles, or objects 100 feet ahead and 10 feet to either side, indicating duties to avoid interference with the convoy or using safe highway conditions.
Overcrowded conditions force a staggered attendance plan at the public school. Beginners will come 9 to 11 30 a m with Senior Grade I at 11 30 and Grade A attending all day. Those starting this term should come this week, with twenty already enrolled.
Souwagrz Fitzpatrick and James G Schwarts wed at All Sainte Rectory on April 6 with Rev Barnes officiating. Ariires Coates and Eden Jane Coates tie the knot at Willowdale on March 25 with Rev J H Austin presiding. Leo Lindskog and Signa Shelden marry at Lutheran parsonage on April 2, attended by Bertha Shelden and Magnus Magnuson. The couple plan to reside in Fairy Glen where Lindskog farms.
Fragmentary OCR notes a voyage or travel reference between Robinson and Melfort with an April 8 marker and repeating names, but details are unclear and incomplete.
Attendance at the sacramental service at St James Presbyterian Church last Sunday morning drew a large crowd. About seventy partook of the Supper and sixteen joined at this communion, adding to ten who joined at the last quarterly communion, totaling twenty six new members in Rev. D. Campbell's brief pastorate. A positive sign of progress and substantial work in the historic congregation.
Jas Ratledge notes ongoing farm land deals with Henry Bevington buying the east half 81-41-19 from Winnipeg Western Land Corp. Mesere, E V Purdy and Spears of Naisberry buy east half 19-45-17 from F R Crawford. J O Cowell purchases the east half M4e18. J E Beachler Reynolds Neb and Oliver Haney list further purchases including J Aebdown taking the southwest 15-46-18 and EA Smith acquiring By W 17-44-19 from D Coangeald. John Robertson buys a parcel as well.
The Methodist Church in Melfort hosts missionary and social service anniversary events Sunday through Wednesday. Rev Endicott of Saskatoon returns after twenty years to preach and speak on Is the World Getting Any Better? A missionary collection is planned for Wednesday. Rev Hugh Dobson will visit and discuss Child Welfare and After the War with illustrated talks.
April event by Women Grain Growers Association raised 4200 with 770 from heather favours and 49 70 total, plus 17 50 from a dainty tea. Members and donors listed include Mesdames Campbell Donald Booth Watt and Mrs Gilray Sehaler noted for raffles. A next Saturday event planned.
The Pleasant Valley Red Cross raised 417 at a whist drive held in the Orange hall on Friday under the Red Cross. Prizes were won by Miss Hilda Pichler and another player. A shipment of goods including bags of cod was sent to Bagina for Housewives.
The fourth regular Weldon Rural Municipality No.450 council meeting held April 2 in Kinistino’s municipal office had full attendance. Debates covered a line of credit with Bank of Ottawa, highway surveys, a bylaw taxing hawkers and peddlers at 2500 annually, private ditch piping, road and tax allocations, deputy reeve appointment, and multiple council payments to local firms and individuals.
Time sheets for J Wickstrom Winni peg Ceiling and Roofing Co Reeve Stolin Hagglund P Cessna show expenses and indemnity payments totaling specific sums. The council orders all time sheets paid and then adjourns.
Local plans reveal a new apartment block in Melfort to house about thirty families. Directors of the Northers Trott Go of Waalow say the project will relieve current housing pressures, though initial setbacks have delayed construction.
J Gherman of the Melfort Trading Co plans a modern expansion to connect a former Clift Bros store via an archway. The new dry goods and womens and childrens wear area will occupy the expanded space while the existing store handles clothing gents furnishings and groceries. Improvements include a ladies rest room and a sanitary drinking fountain with openings expected in a few days.
The Monday session focused on 1918 estimates and tax assessments. Mayor Moore presided as councillors Wild Gberman Lancaster Jameson and MacEwen attended. With last year’s assessment kept, a 25 cent mill rate would meet needs. a 2 per cent cut was discussed, and a 30 per cent reduction was authorized on motion by McEwen and Jameson.
Melfort council met April 7 with Reeve J F Younghusband and councillors Rawson Kipling Galloway McPherson Greaves and Davidson present. The minutes were adopted as read. Several financial decisions were approved including a grant of 300 to R C and purchases of 10 Western Steel Single Drags at 30 each. Other actions set tax arrears relief and various district supports while approving a 6000 credit from Bank of Ontario for promissory notes. The town agreed to assist Willow Creek cooperation for information and donated 300 to the Red Cross from municipal funds.
A Thursday evening gathering of the St James Presbyterian Church Guild features an address by Mr O D Hill on The trial of Jesse from the legal standpoint and a solo by Rev Barnes along with other program items.
