The piece rails at the Castle precincts contest against Dr Macapamy and criticizes the Postmaster General as unfriendly to opponents. It laments ministerial weakness, assembly quarrels, and calls for reform, denouncing logrolling, cheap labor schemes, and the push for Coolie labor to grow cotton while warning of social and political risks.
The NSW Legislative Council emasculated the land bill more than our Upper House. The measure aimed at five selection before or after survey but was altered to favor squatters. Lessees may purchase within leases, reducing scope. Mr Roserson may abandon the bill, but the Governor could add new members to push passage. A constitutional reform proposal failed in our Assembly, likely meeting the same fate.
At the weekly meeting of the Migrants Aid Society Committee held Saturday, the superintendent reported home stays as 34 admitted last week with 40 discharged. The total now stands at 384, including 11 in the asylum care, 108 chargeable to the site, and 25 unaffiliated cases.
