On May 15 1796 a historically significant event occurred when an eight year old boy received the first vaccination against smallpox, performed by Edward Jenner. The note recalls later milestones including Gail Borden's condensed milk patent in 1853 and Vaseline trademark in 1878. It also mentions Mr. Sandy Morrison delivering two trainloads of cattle.
In 1919 events included a Philadelphia church service for mothers initiated by Anne Jarvis which spurred Mother's Day. Manitoba hosted its first Music Competition Festival in Winnipeg with about 2,500 performers. Also noted were Palestine’s transition to independence, Israel’s declaration, and notable figures Jeanne Sauve and Elvis Presley incidents.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Alberta warns of a new Internet scam named phishing. Officials say emails claim technical problems require recertification of personal data and direct victims to a counterfeit site to steal bank PINs social insurance and credit card numbers. No legitimate financial institution solicits such information by email, says Commissioner Frank Work.
Christopher Penney, facing multiple charges including break and enter, was granted a temporary amendment to his bail by Judge D. Brand to allow participation as a contestant in the Nashville Stand Off competition run by New Country 1270. The condition applies only during the contest dates May 13 to 15.
A Medicine Hat man Correy Gordon Straub received a 24 month sentence to be served in the community after pleading guilty to possession with intent to sell. Police say on August 20 2003 he met an undercover officer in a park where eight racks of crack cocaine totaling about 4.1 grams and 820 dollars were found. 12 months are house arrest and the remainder carries supervision conditions.
M M Meat Shops will hold its 17th annual Charity Barbecue this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Medicine Hat 13th Avenue location. The Kitchener based chain, now at 395 stores, started in 1980. Volunteers nationwide will grill to hit the 2005 fundraising goal of $1.5 million, part of nearly $10 million raised to date.
Alberta will not seek an out of province probe into the taser incident involving Edmonton police officers and a drunk teen. Attorney General Ron Stevens said three senior Crown prosecutors independently reviewed the matter and reached the same conclusion that Const. Mike Wasylyshen acted justifiably. Tom Engel had urged a Saskatchewan review.

Traffic on 13th Avenue just north of Strachan Road slowed Thursday afternoon after a southbound automobile collision. It was not confirmed if serious injuries occurred.
