Thompson’s death and music publishing influence, Trudeau era no confidence vote, and a tragic plane door accident in Congo are noted.
The provincial government cautions Albertans to avoid mouse feces, saliva and urine to prevent hantavirus infection. Deputy Dr. Karen Grimsrud urges safety steps including gloves, ventilation, disinfectant spray, and minimizing disturbance. One death reported in central Alberta. similar warning issued in Saskatchewan.
Canadian Press reports two Edmonton area incidents. In Fort McMurray a woman was found dead in a trailer after a shooting, prompting lockdowns around two nearby schools and an investigation with no arrests announced.
Alberta Premier Ralph Klein distanced himself from a cabinet minister who attacked an auditor general report on long-term care for seniors. Lyle Oberg questioned the auditors’ medical qualifications while the minister blamed paperwork, not care, for failing standards. The auditor general’s review said about one third of homes failed or partly met basic care standards, criticizing the standards themselves as weak.
An inquest will sit May 24 to 27 at Saskatoon Court of Queen's Bench into the death of 35 year old Andrew Moore fatally shot after pulling a handgun during a confrontation with police. Moore was sought on outstanding warrants when shot by an officer who recognized him.
The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal ordered a new trial for Jeffrey Brown and Jeffrey Kindrat after overturning acquittals. They face charges of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl near Tisdale in September 2001. The trial starts January 9.
Macaulay Culkin testified that he was never molested by Michael Jackson and called the allegations against Jackson “absolutely ridiculous.” He rejected for the record the idea he was harmed during visits to Jackson’s ranch and dismisses a display of magazines as irrelevant.
Ottawa traders mood turns jittery as Paul Martin's minority Liberal government faces threats to stay in power. The loonie slid to as low as 80.12 U.S. cents before settling near 80.14, with analysts calling it the worst performing major currency amid House of Commons turmoil.
