In Milan a doctor, Diego Fava, was wounded by three gunshots as Red Brigades continue to withhold word on Aldo Moro's fate. The group claimed other attacks but did not confirm responsibility for this latest shooting.
The province awarded April contracts totaling 641 671 70 for southern Alberta. North End Construction Ltd. bid 143 827 75 to add to Bow Island Treasury Branch, beating Boychuck Construction Ltd. by over 4 000. D and H Construction bid 218 616, John Ens Construction 128 583 20 for a Medicine Hat group home, Viggo Hansen Construction 143 750 as second low. Landscape Irrigation Services bid 289 841 77 for Calgary Fish Creek Park, awarded to McEwen Bro. Landscaping Ltd. in Calgary for 141 044 65.
Jacques Mesrine a French Canadian criminal escapes from La Sante prison in Paris along with two associates. Police fire on the trio wounding a partner while the others flee in a waiting car. Mesrine previously escaped from Montreal and was linked to the killings of two Quebec game wardens during his fugitive years.
The 23rd Rotary Music Festival concluded with the Stars of the Festival Concert at the college. The Rose Bowl for best performance went to violinist Bill Van der Sloot and cellist Henry Van der Sloot, who also won last year’s Medicine Hat Trio. Kathy McKinley received the $200 Rotary Club Scholarship and related prizes. Gail Smith earned the Musical Theatre $100 scholarship. study grants of $100 were given to Clinton Sails and Bill Van der Sloot for a Calgary workshop. Astrid Haba received the Chairman's Award of $50.

UN talks on Namibia stalled after SWAPO pulled out amid regional tension following South Africa’s raid into Angola. Delegations from Canada the United States Britain France and West Germany had planned to press SWAPO leaders on a five power plan toward ceasefire troop pullout UN overseen elections and eventual independence. The plan seeks to end hostilities and end South Africa’s mandate era in Namibia.
David Berkowitz admitted the six murders and related wounding in New York as part of a plea in Brooklyn Supreme Court. He confessed to the 44 caliber gun killings and to fires he claimed setting, with sentencing scheduled for May 22 in the Stacy Moskowitz case.
Lorne Reznowski won the Social Credit leadership over Martin Hattersley by 356 to 115 at a two day Winnipeg convention. Delegates from Quebec and the wings outside promised reform driven by Christian morals while criticizing Trudeau’s government and media. Reznowski plans a Winnipeg St Boniface run and calls for a Quebec deputy to lead Social Credit forces there.
