Village seeks to run post office in Newbury Ontario

Newbury residents push to take and operate the local post office with the village council applying for the postal contract. Reeve Dianne Brewer says a five day a week clerk could save taxes and maintain current service. Canada Post studies the unique request but has not decided. Lithuania delays independence bid to seek end of blockade

Lithuania's parliament approves a 100 day moratorium on its declaration of independence in exchange for an end to the Kremlin blockade and start of negotiations with Moscow. The plan, 69 to 35, would begin with talks agreed by Gorbachev and Landsbergis and keeps laws passed since independence in effect.

German hiker found after five weeks lost trek near Banff

Franz Hopfinger 27, set out May 18 from Banff toward Lake Louise and vanished for five weeks. Wardens spotted him 15 kilometres north of Banff near a tarpaulin, airlifted to Banff hospital he appeared healthy though gaunt and had subsisted on wild foods.

Wheat makes comeback in Canadian seeding survey

Statistics Canada surveyed 35 000 farmers at the start of June and found 11.3 million hectares were planted to spring wheat, up 7 percent from last year and the largest since 1986. Farmers shifted from durum to spring wheat with ample rainfall boosting grain prices expectations. Overall wheat area rose 3 percent while idle land rose to 8.5 million hectares.
