The government and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers hardened positions as picket lines formed nationwide after a midnight walkout. About 23,000 members were urged to strike though workers in Kenora Petawawa and Pembroke Ontario reported for duty and would stay at their posts once notified.
In Medicine Hat 42 letter carriers crossed a picket line with about six inside postal workers joining the strike. Mail transit halted citywide though sorted mail will be distributed today. Government and union talks stalled as conciliation offers fail and a broader walkout looms.
The decomposed body of 15 year old Kelly Cook, missing since April 22 after being picked up by a man while babysitting at home in Standard, Alberta, was found near Chin Lakes about 240 kilometres south of Standard. RCMP say forensics confirm identity by dental records and investigation continues. Local community raised a $40,000 Kelly Cook Fund for her safe return, with calls for the killer to be brought to justice.
The federal government will create a scholarship program worth up to 750000 dollars annually in Terry Fox's name. Prime Minister Trudeau announced the plan as MPs and senators praised Fox as an authentic Canadian hero. The program will provide up to 250 postsecondary students with 3000 dollar grants each to keep Fox's spirit alive.
