Kings Bay Spitzbergen June 27 reports say the Italia crash survivors fear death as fire is seen aboard the airship after the May 23 departure. Of sixteen onboard the North Pole expedition, six remain alive. one killed and three missing after the balloon drifted east and burned following the crash.
Calgary June 26. John Shanks a Nordegg coal operator denounces Premier Brownlee and says the coal industry will fight the Coal Tax Act as ultra vires. He cites high taxes and recent industry closures including CPR Bankhead and Hosmer mines and notes a $200,000 payment under the act. He argues the act is unlawful and questions provincial authority.
Sant Etienne France June 27 reports farm workers press for daily five litres of wine in wage talks. Farmers propose weekly pay of $1300 with meals lodging and three measures of wine. the mayor is to mediate amid tense regional harvest disputes.
Winnipeg June 27. Magister Sir Hugh John MacDonald sentenced Thomas Greshuk known as Doctor to two years in the penitentiary and twenty lashes for two charges of indecent assault. He collapsed after sentencing and was carried to the cells. He posed as a fully qualified physician claiming cures for every disease.
Berlin reports a Britisher named Eckert was attacked in a Massertz forest near the Polish border by two men who fired revolvers and wounded him severely. He was rushed to a hospital and operated on to save his life. attackers escaped. Eckert previously lived on Pine Rupert Island where he ran a hotel and physical culture establishment.
F Reider aged 65 of 101746 Bal mora Street was scorched about the face and arms in a gas explosion at his home around 12 10 a m He had gone to the cellar and struck a match causing the blast The fire was contained by neighbor F Goddard and firemen found little for the brigade to do He was taken to hospital under Dr Caeshaw after initial burn treatment by Dr Mc Ewen
Robert Bruce Mantell, noted Shakespearean actor and tenor, died at his home in Atlantic Highlands after an illness of two months. He was 74 years old.
Winnipeg reports the dullest grain session of the week with a deserted wheat pit and negligible total volume. Prices held firm early but closed 13 8 to 5 8 lower as weak support and heavy rain in the US Southwest and continued winter wheat belt delays hindered harvesting. Cash wheat and coarse grain prices eased.
A Tromsoe despatch reports Roald Amundsen's grounded plane was sighted June 20 by a Norwegian sealer near Northeast Land on an ice floe. The crew were seen repairing the machine though dense ice blocked approach. The message traveled via a Russian steamer to Archangel.
Nominations closed at 1 PM today for the July 18 British Columbia election. About 115 candidates across 40 ridings will contest 48 seats, with Liberals fielding 45, Conservatives 48, Labor nine, Independents eight, and Socialists one. Victoria elects four members with full Liberal and Conservative tickets and two Independents. Premier J D McLean seeks Victoria City, S F Tolmie campaigns in Saanich. two women enter including Mary Ellen Smith for Esquimalt and Mrs Paul Smith for Vancouver. Twenty seven ridings see two candidates, while Nanaimo may see five contesting the seat left by William Sloan's death.
A new serial titled The Enemy by Channing Pallock debuts in tomorrow's News. It centers on war times between Germany and England with a love triangle and will have a film scene shot at the Monarch Theatre soon.
A twister struck the Consolidated and Cartey oil camps in the Satt rock field near Salt Lake, Casper Wyo June 27 injuring twenty people, three seriously. It caused about 500000 in damage and wrecked over 125 oil cars, damaging gas plants and the tower station.
Calgary official Mr H Morse and Mr Harry Parkes visited with Dr F W Gershaw MP to review Elk Water Lake Cottagers Association plans. Roadway through the avenue will be repaired to handle summer traffic with a laborer to maintain roads culverts bathing beach shelter and water supply. A two mile barb wire fence will extend into the beach to keep cattle from the camp grounds and water source. Automatic gates and wagon runways will be installed similar to those used by the Canada Land and Irrigation Co in the Vauxhall area.
In Masset British Columbia a 24 year old named Harry Smith was ruled not responsible by reason of insanity for the murder of his father. He will be committed to an asylum for the criminally insane. The slain man was discovered with bullet wounds and evidence of attempted body destruction with dynamite.
W T Alexander F H Alexander and E C L Taylor KC former Director of the Canada National Fire Insurance Company appeared in Provincial Police Court before Magistrate R M Noble on charges of conspiracy to defraud and were remanded with plea to July 4.
Alfred E. Smith appears set for the Democratic nomination at the upcoming convention with Ohio delegates pledging to support him. The event plans indicate Smith’s nomination on Thursday as the party leans toward unity and a pledge to enforce the Volstead Act.
Berlin reports reveal Mecklenburg Strelitz justice ministry admits miscarriage of justice in 1926 case. Four witnesses have confessed to the crime, proving the Russian farm laborer Jakobovsky innocent, executed February 15, 1926 after a trial in 1925 without interpreter aid.

Edmonton June 26 The Alberta Government will convene a round-table conference with mortgage men and other interested organizations in late September to discuss financial legislation. Premier Brownlee said the action follows the Jasper convention and noted ongoing consultation with the industry, including plans after the Dominion meeting in Regina.
London June 26 The Winchester Diocese plans a confirmation service using the new form from the revised prayer book without ecclesiastical authorization. Bishop Frank Theodore Woods notified clergy the form will be used in all future confirmations. Parliament and the King must sanction the measure for state church authority.
Edward Gertenschlager aged 45 of Wadsworth placed six sticks of dynamite under his body in a barn behind his home in Akron. He lighted the fuses and blew himself to pieces, scattering body parts a block away as the blast shook houses, blew roof portions from the barn, and startled the village.
