Derheim Jury Urges Warning Lights at Private Crossings

A Derheim inquest jury urged installation of warning lights at private railroad crossings after ruling heavy rain and poor visibility caused the June 21 collision that killed Ed Derheim. The CPR westbound train was cleared of blame. August Schneider testified Derheim was en route to fetch his sister and visit his wife in hospital at Medicine Hat. The accident occurred about 9:20 a.m. a mile west of Irvine.

Civic Officials Say Riverside Park May Not Be Used for Parking

Civic officials stated that Riverside Park and any part of it reserved for park purposes cannot be converted to parking or other commercial uses without a vote by ratepayers. Authorities agreed the land is dedicated to park purposes and would remain so unless ratepayers approve a change.

Guatemala Crisis Turns deadly as students shot by police

Police opened fire with sub machine guns and pistols on a Guatemala City student march against a state of alarm. Three university students were killed and 19 wounded, including a girl, during the Monday night protest near the government palace. The state of alarm grants martial law powers to the Castillo Armas regime amid alleged communist plots. The clash occurred as hundreds demonstrated for civil liberties curtailed by the Sunday order.

Queen Honors Canadian Victoria Cross Holders in Hyde Park
