In a field east of Vernon two 20 year old UBC students Derry McCullough and Gordon Follis were killed when their single engine Cessna crashed. The accident occurred Sunday in full view of witnesses and left both men crushed in the wreckage.
Shirley Willock, a 22 year old Calgary insurance office receptionist, was named queen of the 1956 Calgary stampede after a vote among 14 contestants. Prizes include a trip to Hollywood and Las Vegas and 300 dollars in cash.
Members of the Senior Citizens Club are asked to attend the funeral for James Briggs Tuesday afternoon at St. Barnabas church. The service begins at 2 o clock with assembly at 1 45 and many are urged to bring cars to the event.
A Canadian Press survey recounts weekend fatalities across Canada from Friday evening to Sunday night. Ontario led with twelve deaths including eight traffic fatalities. Quebec recorded seven traffic deaths. BC had two traffic deaths. Saskatchewan, Alberta and Nova Scotia each reported two. Manitoba one. Non accidental deaths included a BC rifle slaying and a Toronto area bludgeoning.
The body of 37 year old Lewis Lloyd was found Sunday afternoon in a rain soaked ditch near an Edmonton area drive in theatre. Lloyd recently moved from Vancouver and was last seen alive after borrowing $20 and leaving with a companion. His truck lay in a separate ditch about 200 yards away while investigators search the scene for a weapon and clues. Lloyd is survived by a wife and three young children.
Medicine Hat near completion of the first round of civic mosquito spray. About two thirds sprayed including Flats and Hill region with a Kalgary made trap awaited for result checks. The remaining Flats and industrial districts to be sprayed tonight with potential repeat pass.
Minnie Mangum former Commonwealth Building and Loan official sentenced to 20 years for embezzling 2 082 968 25 and 10 years for false information to the state corporation commission to run consecutively. Additional indictments on forgery and false information were split or dropped.
In Vancouver the BC Supreme Court awarded $75,000 to three year old Clara Pittman of Kaslo for hospital burns suffered in December 1953 with $5,367 for medical expenses to her father Louis Pittman. Justice McInnes ordered the hospital to place the funds for future plastic surgery and tutoring, noting the girl cannot expect a normal life.
