Lemberg the Galicia capital fell to Austro German forces after a heavy fight, though Petrograd reports say Russians held the Dniester with heavy losses to the Austro Germans. Three Canadians awarded Victoria Crosses for action near Ypres.
In London the government moves to bar all exports to the Netherlands except shipments to the Netherlands Overseas Trust. The export control bill sets a 2500 dollar fine or two years imprisonment for violations and records consignments to prevent surges. Cotton licenses will be handled by a special committee. The bill passed all stages.
London announces a sweeping Munitions Bill to regulate ammunition production. It bars strikes and lockouts, mandates compulsory arbitration, allows fines for slackers, caps employer profits, and creates a volunteer workforce ready to be deployed where needed.
Winnipeg June 22. C Watters president of the Trades and Labor Congress said the organization does not want local mechanics to be sent to England for munition work. The group prefers to bring work home to Manitoba arguing that removing tradespeople would harm other industries.
A Tunisian ship torpedoed off Lowestoft by a German submarine was beached by its skipper. The vessel, bound from Montreal to Hull with 60,000 tons of wheat, had its crew land at Lowestoft. The report notes it is not the Allan Tuna or Tunisian.
Winnipeg June 23 The Royal Commission opens with Chief Justice Mathers stating it should not hear Fullerton charges since a Commissioner is named as a witness. It will recommend to the Attorney General the appointment of a new commission to handle the matters raised by Mr Fullerton.
Sir Richard McBride returned from France aboard the New York and stated that the Germans are demoralized and discouraged. He asserted the war’s outcome is not in doubt and that Allied troops are supremely confident. He praised the energetic Canadians for their work.
A powerful storm ripped through Little Rock with wind speeds reported at ten miles an hour and a 22 degree temperature drop in 15 minutes. A negro was killed by a live wire torn loose by the wind and storefronts suffered heavy damage. Cars lay scattered in the streets as Fort Smith Hot Springs Arkansas City Philadelphia and Helena reported communication outages. In Malvern winds and rain damaged nearby forests but the city remained unharmed.
Claude Mason a Roberts Creek settler was drowned when his horse and wagon backed down an open slip at the Vancouver wharf Saturday night. His three year old daughter riding in the wagon was saved.
Ottawa reports 24 hour casualty lists eight, bringing Canadian totals to 9,205. Killed 1,173. wounded 5,908. missing 1,884. Also notes the liner Miss Onabie from Liverpool docked Montreal June 20, with Western passengers bound for Medicine Hat arriving June 25.
Calgary reports Captain Eric W. Buckler a renowned rancher and real estate man was killed in action. He was previously cited by General French for distinguished gallantry in the field yesterday.
An earthquake last night in the Imperial Valley California killed five people. The quake damaged the valley towns and caused about 1 million dollars in losses. El Centro suffered most as five victims died in Mexicali across the border where martial law was proclaimed.
Winnipeg June 23 Hon G R Coldwell rejected all claims aired in Minneapolis by WY W H Horwood and William Salt before the Royal Commission. He flatly denied every allegation against him and repelled parts of Elliott’s testimony involving himself.
Mrs. W Forster received word from her brother Nicholas Hayes who joined the First Canadian Contingent and is now in a Manchester convalescent home after head shrapnel injuries. He says Canadians in the charge were nearly wiped out and he was lucky to live to recount the fight. He recalls Penny Lee falling, location unknown.
Sergeant Michael OLeary of the Irish Guards was honored at Buckingham Palace where King George presented him the Victoria Cross for valor during the winter campaign in France.
Prince Albert Sask June 23. An effort to derail the CN R train from The Pas to Hudson's Bay Junction by placing a fish plate in a frog about 43 miles from The Pas was detected. Eleven Austrians are held at Hudson's Bay Junction by the RNWMP in connection with the case, believed to include the culprits.
Regina Sask June 23 after a conference with temperance leaders the provincial government declared a harsher temperance bill. Hon J A Calder announced a new proposal that no liquor may be kept or consumed after June 30 in any hotel or other place of accommodation.
Mr. Ed Forbes found a deadly tarantula drop from bananas bought last evening. He recovered quickly from the scare and despatched the poisonous spider.
The New York Sun features a cartoon of William Jennings Bryan with a Pecksniff parody. The caption mocks his persona as a self-proclaimed peacemaker while implying duplicity and moral pretense in a pointed, sardonic tone.
Winnipeg reports that government seeks to extend the royal commission powers to hear charges brought by C P Fullerton representing 24 Conservative members amid tensions with Tom Kelly’s interests. Dr Simpson departs for France, while editorial notes question Ottawa oversight and CN R involvement.
Washington reports on June 23 that new Haytian revolutionary activity prompts the navy to order Rear Admiral Caperton and the cruiser Washington with 700 bluejackets and 200 marines to Cape Haitien. The French cruiser Descartes has already landed bluejackets there.
