In northern Thailand a burglar entered a grocery shop about 200 kilometres north of Bangkok. He hid under the bed where the owner slept, drank several beers, and fell asleep. Police woke the owner who summoned help. The suspect, Wiman Sukhareen, 32, was charged with breaking and entering and faces up to six months in prison.
The Medicine Hat City council re designated land formerly MI at Bridge Street and Industrial Avenue SE to R3 for multi family dwellings. Surrounding parcels remain R2 low density residential. Nearby R3 sites exist within 1.5 blocks since 2004. An environmental assessment by EnvironGeo Testing this May found no contamination on the site.

Hundreds of Mexican teachers will study English in Alberta under a partnership between Olds College and the University of Calgary. The two institutions will also send instructors to Mexico and offer distance learning. Olds College has trained about 240 Mexican teachers since 1993.
Newfoundland natural resources minister Ed Byrne has resigned after an audit raised questions of financial irregularities in the legislature. Premier Danny Williams said he asked Byrne to step down and noted similar allegations across parties, with details referred to the Justice Department. Byrne, 43, had led the Conservative party in 1998 and faced a 1999 provincial election defeat.

Police said scores of Iraqi workers were abducted as they left the al-Nasr General Complex in Taji, about 20 kilometres north of Baghdad. Lieut. Thaer Mahmoud reported a bus and a minivan were used, with the total number taken still unclear. The site, formerly a military plant, marks another mass kidnapping incident.
