Chretien Bill On Political Financing Clears Commons

After months of debate and compromise Prime Minister Jean Chretien’s reform bill passed the House of Commons 172 to 62 with Liberal MPs backing the government. The bill tightens donations to 41 000 from corporations and unions to riding associations, limits individual donations to 5000, raises taxpayer subsidies per vote, and boosts candidate refunds to 60 percent with a future permanent 50 percent level. The measure now goes to the Senate where party control is Liberal-dominated.
