City Council to price two cement company gas wells

Victoria Cross Won by Medicine Hat Man

The official Gazette reports four Canadians awarded the Victoria Cross including Lieut. Frederick Maurice Watson Harvey of Strathcona Horse a native of Ireland and serving from Medicine Hat. He led a charge under heavy fire jumped a wired trench shot a machine gunner and captured the weapon aiding the village assault.

Local Brakeman Killed at Swift Current

J. R. Jordan a brakeman at Swift Current died after reportedly slipping from the engine pivot and being run over in the yards. He was taken to Swift Current hospital where he died shortly after. An inquest will be held and arrangements were made to move the remains to Medicine Hat. He leaves a wife and three young children living at 888A Fourth St.

Merchants Ask City To Reconsider Tax Plan

A delegation of local retailers met the council to urge reconsideration of a business tax. Spokesman H A Moore read a resolution opposing the levy while M A Brown stressed no antagonism and argued taxes should be fair, shared among all community classes.

Half Holiday in Stores for July and All

The Retail Merchants' Association met in Medicine Hat City Hall with many merchants present. They discussed and voted to close stores at 12 36 p m on Wednesdays in July and August and addressed road improvements street lighting and a reduced business tax. They urged a council merchant committee to discuss tax matters and praised electricity rate cuts for window lighting and street lighting improvements.

Ottawa reports Hon. E. L. Patenaude has resigned as Secretary of State. Sir George Foster says correspondence with the Premier will be tabled after Governor General consent. Orders include a Grain Supervisors Board to regulate flour prices and transport, with export aims to Britain and Allies.

Ottawa June 12 The pensions legislation is being revised and Sir Thomas White has given notice of a resolution to the Commons providing for the creation of a commission to be known as The Board of Pension Commissioners for Canada. The new Board will consist of three commissioners instead of six.
