A 19 year old Saskatoon man, Barry Braun, was hospitalized in stable condition after a 12 gauge shotgun discharged outside a house during a domestic dispute investigation. Pellets struck his passing car through a window, and doctors later said one eye may be irreparably damaged. Trevor Gates, Braun's friend, relayed the injury update.
The United States freed four East Europeans charged with espionage in exchange for 25 East Europeans detained in East Germany and Poland. The Justice Department announced the exchange, noting the agreement with East German officials was completed earlier in the day.
Justice Minister John Crosbie lashed out at Liberal MP Don Boudria accusing him of slander against his brother Andrew Crosbie over a $380 000 Revenue Canada claim. Crosbie said the remarks were false and damaging and demanded a withdrawal while noting possible confidences breach.
The Jordanian airliner with 78 aboard diverted after a Beirut takeoff and landed in Palermo to refuel. Hijackers, armed, demanded a meeting with the Arab League chief and the Lebanese ambassador, then ordered a flight toward Tunisia. Crew and passengers included two Americans and a Cypriot minister.
Canadian delegation led by International Trade Minister James Kelleher arrives in Moscow for two day talks aimed at reducing Canada's more than 2 billion dollar annual trade surplus with the Soviet Union. Possible wheat for oil swap and a government to government wheat agreement are on the agenda as Ottawa seeks to rebalance trade and end separate wheat dealings with Export-Plev.
Ottawa Finance Minister Michael Wilson defended a proposal to index government bonds to inflation. He argued indexed bonds could cut interest costs for government and ultimately aid old-age pensioners by reducing deficits and boosting private pension funds, while noting the plan is only a consideration.
The public school board approved a one year trial Co-Curricular Teacher Recognition Policy allowing teachers who log extra hours for student programs to bank up to 10 days off per year. The plan costs up to $5,000 and requires hour logs and school approval by Sept. 30.
