Parliament stalemate looms as the Progressive Conservatives appear to form a government after the general election. Diefenbaker leads with 110 seats, Liberals hold 103, with CCF and Social Credit gains shifting the balance and signaling a possible new election within the year.
Agriculture Minister Gardiner won a tight Saskatchewan contest against 29 year old CCF candidate John Bur from Melville, marking his 13th consecutive election victory since entering parliament in 1940s. Gardiner has long held federal and provincial roles, including a historic long tenure in cabinet.
Canadian voters cast a record 6,166,077 ballots, topping 1953 and 1949 tallies. The Progressive Conservatives led with 39 percent, Liberals 41 percent, and CCF 11 percent, with Social Credit at six percent. Provincial results shown for eight of forty polls.
The advance poll signals a tight race with Bud Olson Social Credit ahead 55 to 40 for Earl Smith CCF and 24 for Harry Weiner Liberal. Unofficial morning totals show Olson at 10 255 votes and Weiner 8 136 with 22 117 registered voters of 29 579.

Jubilation filled Social Credit HQ as H. A. Bud Olson praised supporters after Liberal Mayor Harry Weiner conceded defeat. Olson said the landslide shows the strength of backing and organization. He credited voters and stressed bipartisan support for national best interests.
