London reports Lord Cranborne said Great Britain seeks to preserve Spain's territorial integrity regardless of the war's outcome. He noted the government has made the position clear, including to the League of Nations, when Spain was discussed. A Liberal MP pressed for a war pledge, but Cranborne did not answer.
The Winnipeg Board of Trade urged tax levies on property occupants, owner or lessee, using rental value rather than capital value. It also recommended stronger tax collection and a review of the city manager administration plan.

Winnipeg dispatch reports GH Powell traveling to Edmonton from England as the representative of Major Douglas. Powell expresses confidence that Alberta will accept Social Credit if the party presents a united front, stating there is no doubt the movement will succeed.
Winnipeg school board cashed Alberta bond coupons at a loss of 7666 dollars saying it is better to take half value now than nothing. Chairman W A Cuddy announced the coupons were cashed under protest after Alberta government cut interest on its debt from 4.89 to 2.5 percent. The board did not disclose total bond holdings.
Ottawa reports Dominion Housing Act loans total 8,000,000 with 1,161 loans aiding 1,812 families as of June 6. Alberta shows zero loans while other provinces list varied amounts. average loan per family unit is 4,447. Dominion funds part of building loans. rest carried by loan companies.
The National Stockyards in East St Louis Illinois were ordered closed until further notice due to a strike by 300 livestock handlers, announced by Claude Baugh of the United States Department of Agriculture.
The Examiner reports the Los Angeles county grand jury will soon indict at least two people in the 15 year old murder of William Desmond Taylor the noted director. A new figure not previously suspected is linked as central in the famed unsolved case.
A report to the Imperial Conference from its air communications committee proposes a Vancouver to Australia air mail service. The plan would connect with the trans-Canada postal system and link to soon to be started trans-Atlantic lines.
Alberta Legislature adjourned to June 14 amid protests from Liberal and Conservative members. Premier Aberhart said the short recess would let the government consult Powell Credit adviser Major Douglas sent from England. Debate centered on whether to proceed without discussing Social Credit related bills and involved Duggan Crockroft and Fallon in acrimonious exchanges.
Ottawa June 8 The Presbyterian Church in Canada will continue negotiations with the United Church next year to reduce or remove legal technicalities straining relations for years. The board of administration empowered to proceed, with overtures from Alberta Saskatchewan and Manitoba synods seeking restoration of all Presbyterian bequests held by the United Church since 1925 and admission of court rulings that Presbyterians remain outside the United Church.
Dizzy Dean outpitched Carl Hubbell as the St. Louis Cardinals crushed the league leading New York Giants 8 to 1. Dean allowed three hits and struck out six, with St. Louis scoring early and pulling away. In other action, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia played to a high scoring, 8 to 3 result.
The public accounts committee of the Legislature may investigate Alberta Public Works operations. Insurgent Social Credit members plan to file a resolution to convene the committee to probe highway expenditures and the dismissal of senior officials H P Keith and F J Davidson. The Edmont on Wetaskiwin highway costs total 276 957 with 114 580 paid for machinery rental and labor. Veterans seeking reinstatement will be advised to contact the department head through the Edmonton ex servicemen’s organization.
Flint June 9 CP report says Consumers Power Company workers struck after rejecting a settlement. Major industries in Saginaw valley shut down though city lights remained. Bay City Flint and hundreds of communities in 13 counties lacked electricity except for hospitals and public services. Fire alarm system failed in Flint until batteries joined the circuit. About 100000 industrial workers idle and 400000 residents inconvenienced.
At about 9 o clock this morning rain began at Vauxhall and continued for about two hours. The shower extended to Enchant and Lomond with clearing by 11 am, while the only other rain in the district fell from Gleichen west to Calgary.
A morning blaze at a rear brooder on 1126 Steel Street trapped forty baby chicks and fifteen hens. Fire crews arrived at 4:26 a.m. and prevented total loss to the chicken house, but the flock was badly scorched.
Postmasters at the Alberta branch convention in Lethbridge protest a nine cent per hour overtime rate. They claim postmasters work long hours up to 14 in a day with high responsibility and limited overtime pay. The Alberta delegation includes 190 delegates with J Sullivan Deputy Postmaster General of Ottawa attending.
Halifax June 9 The Acadian Coal Company miners reject the district executive’s recommendation to return to work pending negotiations. Striking since May 30 they vow to stay out as the only path to higher wages and urge coal and steel workers in Nova Scotia to join. The Inverness 30 colliery workers are told to resume work tomorrow after a 11 day stoppage.
Lima reports from June eight describe scientists from the United States, Japan, and Peru observing the sun’s total eclipse from high altitudes. Major Albert W. Stevens and the American Museum of Natural History team recorded the event with cameras aboard the Santa Silvia, flying 25 000 feet in the path of totality over the Pacific between Trujillo and Chimborito. Fears among mountain Indians were noted as totality began at 6:21 p.m. E D T. temperatures dropped to four degrees below zero at altitude.
