Medicine Hat Police Service says officers responded at about 10 a.m. Wednesday to a Calder house invasion in which four men forced entry seeking someone. Two suspects, aged 21 and 29, were arrested on Dunmore Road near Argo's restaurant. two others remain at large. Witnesses say one suspect handed a paper from his sock to an officer, who kept it. The men were searched, cuffed, and taken away in separate cars.
Brooks RCMP thank the public for tips that led to the arrest of Christopher Gordon Clark on an outstanding warrant. He faces charges of possession of stolen property theft under five thousand dollars and break and enter theft. His next court appearance is July 27. Police remind the public they play a key role in law enforcement and crime prevention and urge reporting suspicious activity to Brooks RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
Alberta will issue stab-resistant protective vests to about 1,100 front-line correctional officers and workers in provincial jails and remand centres. The $650,000 program, announced in a July 6 release, aims for vests by fall. Solicitor General Harvey Cenaiko says Homemade-spiked weapons pose major risk and calls Alberta first in Canada to act.
U S President George W. Bush fell during a bike ride at the Gleneagles resort while at a world leaders meeting. He sustained mild to moderate scrapes on his hands and arms and wore a helmet. An officer accompanying him suffered a very minor ankle injury. The incident occurred on wet asphalt with light rain.
Local groups have until August 8 to apply for more than 600000 in Alberta Community Crime Prevention grants. Eligible applicants include non profits unions societies associations coalitions networks and Aboriginal communities including bands and tribal councils. The program was re established last year under Alberta s renewed crime prevention strategy.
A Saskatchewan panel urged a fresh Metis Nation of Saskatchewan election conducted by an independent Metis commission after finding fraud and voting irregularities in 2004. Maria Campbell, panel chair, said reforms are needed before the vote. Maynard Sonntag will take the report to the department then cabinet for consideration. In a separate case, Arnold Tonnies of Swift Current was fined 350000 and banned from securities work for borrowing 250000 from elderly clients for a cattle operation.
In a B C Supreme Court hearing on Reena Virk’s murder, prosecutor Catherine Murray urged a minimum seven year term before parole for Kelly Ellard, who was 15 at the time of the crime. The hearing also revealed a prior assault on another girl three months earlier, with testimony from former RCMP officer Bruce Brown.
