Detroit stifled Mike Bossy as New York Islanders earned two points with a 3-0 victory on Thursday night. Bossy, 24, aimed to score 50 goals in 50 games but remained scoreless.
In a high profile NHL clash the Islanders face the Nordiques in Uniondale with Bossy mired at 48 goals and shadowed by Detroit’s Paul Woods. Earlier games saw Flyers and Kings triumph while Toronto and Minnesota settled in a 3 3 draw as Bossy again failed to score.
New York Rangers recall Nick Fotiu from Hartford to lead a shaken lineup. The left winger is praised for grit and physical play despite limited shooting and discipline concerns. Fotiu aims to rekindle team spirit amid a season of disappointing results.

In Medicine Hat the Family Sports team beat the Redcliff Marlees 8-7 at the Arena Convention Centre. Gary McDougall Kevin Kromm and Jamie Goldie each netted two goals for Family Sports, with Andy Verstraten and Don Mitchell adding singles. Glen Aman scored three for the Marlees while Jerry Fode added two and Alan Sackman Bruce Vine each had one. The teams were tied 4-3 after the first period and 6-6 after the second. Family Sports drew 11 penalties to the Marlees eight.
NBC projects 105 million viewers in the United States as the Super Bowl becomes a national event. The $550 000 per minute commercials draw fierce demand and scalpers seek up to 1000 per ticket. The Eagles clash with the Raiders in a 24 10 pick by the writer.
Quebec Nordiques on hold Marc Tardifs NHL future will be decided by at least next Tuesday after a two day leave of absence. Tardif remains under contract valued around 250000 a year with three years left while management considers a buyout. He missed practice and a 6 5 loss to the Sabres, and will sit out a trip to Uniondale before the Kings game Monday.
Baltimore Orioles announced one year deals with Sammy Stewart Lenn Sakata Benny Ayala and Gary Roenicke for 1981. Stewart was 7-7 with a 3.55 ERA and three saves last season Ayala hit .265 with 10 homers 33 RBI Sakata hit .193 with one homer and 9 RBI Roenicke batted .239 with 10 homers 28 RBI after missing a month with a fractured wrist.
Jim Benning of the Portland Winter Hawks and Grant Rezansoff of the Victoria Cougars earned WHL players of the week. Benning scored twice and assisted once in an 8-3 win over Victoria, totaling 21 goals and 83 points in 45 games. Rezansoff assisted all three Victoria goals in their loss, bringing his season to 24 goals and 62 points.
