Massey dies former Canadian governor general at 80

Vincent Massey, former governor general of Canada and pioneer of its diplomatic and cultural growth, died in London at age 80 after pneumonia. A native-born GG, he served 1952 to 1959, travelling some 180000 miles in office with his son present at hospital admission.

New Year marks shift to Nova Scotia Crown mill

At midnight the 67 year old Sydney Steel mill shifts from Dominion Steel and Coal to the new Nova Scotia Crown corporation KSYSCO. About 300 workers exit and another 300 begin the graveyard shift as management remains briefly under Dosco supervision. The cost is unofficially pegged near 23 million dollars for plant, equipment and inventory.

Eskimos Rescued After Eight Days on Hudson Bay Ice

Two Eskimos, Ybo Airut and Johnny Tugak, were stranded for eight days on a small ice floe in Hudson Bay near Eskimo Point. Rescue aircraft and a helicopter were mobilized from Gillam and Winnipeg, with daylight limiting operations to Sunday. The pair drifted about 100 miles as temperatures plunged to 40 degrees below zero.

Earthquake Shakes Italian Adriatic Coast At Dawn

A strong quake jolted towns along 150 miles of Italy's upper Adriatic coast south of Venice before dawn, causing alarm but only minor damage.
