Alberta cities reported a record year in construction with total permits reaching 149,425,783 for 1955, led by housing and commercial projects. The gain surpassed 1954 and topped 1953 records, as population growth and provincial prosperity fueled the boom.

City Seeks Million for 1956 Programs Amid Fund Shortage

Provincial Treasurer Hinman says Medicine Hat will consider a 1,000,000 loan in 1956 though the municipal assistance fund is dwindling. Projects include waterworks expansion 500,000 road paving 250,000 a teen age centre and other works. The fund started 1953 with 100 million and had about 11.08 million left in November. Lethbridge seeks 3 million in loans next year with potential doubling. Most loans so far went to Edmonton and Calgary.

Wheat export crop drops below average shipments this year

Canadian wheat and flour exports in the first three months of the crop year fell 14.8 million bushels below the 1950 54 average. Wheat and carryover stocks on November 1 rose to 768.2 million bushels, the third highest for that date. Total exports from Canada the United States Australia and Argentina dropped to 167.4 million bushels, as Argentina and Canada led the decline while the US and Australia increased slightly.
