Ottawa reports seven month deficit at 12.018 billion dollars driven by recession. higher unemployment welfare payments and public debt charges fuel the rise while corporate tax revenue falls. October results show a 1.371 billion deficit, with Lalonde forecasting a 23.6 billion yearly shortfall.
Alberta Health Minister Dave Russell offered doctors a five percent fee rise drawing criticism from AMA district member Dr. Philip Winkelaar who calls the move bad faith. He notes the joint liaison committee had proposed eight to nine percent and cites inflation and costs as driving doctor salaries below pace.

In a night storm off Harwich England two loaded ferries the European Gateway and Speedlink Vanguard collided. One sank in shallow North Sea waters.
