The Bank of Canada lowered its key rate to 8.7 percent from 8.75 percent, marking the first drop after three straight increases. Traders said the move was small and unlikely to affect other rates.
Ottawa Manitoba Premier Howard Pawley said he is considering court action to halt the Canada United States free trade agreement. He called the plan a steamroller as he arrived for a 90 minute meeting with Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and other provincial premiers.
An autopsy was to determine if elderly Donat Gagne 84 who died after eating mussels at Jeffrey Hale Hospital is the third death linked to shellfish poisoning. Hospital director Roger Bertin said the patient died from complications suspected to be due to mussel poisoning.
