Canada defeated Sweden 3 2 on opening day of the Izvestia tournament in Moscow. The Soviet Union dominated West Germany 10 1 and Czechoslovakia edged Finland 2 1 in other early games.
An 82 year old Toronto man, David McLaughlan, died after suffering a stroke following admission for toxic shellfish poisoning. He was among about 105 victims of toxic mussels, with a Montreal man also dead and eleven still hospitalized, three in intensive care.
