Premier Robert Bourassa announces candidacy in the January 20 byelection for the Montreal riding of St Laurent after losing his seat in the Quebec election. The Liberals held the seat by about 16 000 votes as Germain Leduc, in office since 1982, faced Bourassa.
Donald Andrews received one year and Robert Smith seven months in prison after a district court found they wilfully promoted hatred against an identifiable non white group through their Nationalist Report. Judge Edward Wren noted the writings targeted blacks and other non whites and Jews.
Five rows of bodies in the hangar and the smouldering wreckage mark Canada's worst air disaster. A chartered U S DC-8 refuelling at Gander Intl Airport en route from Cairo to Kentucky crashed after takeoff, killing 248 soldiers and eight civilian crew. Federal aviation investigators examine wreckage and locate victims as the death toll is revised downward to 256.

Thomas Sophonow was acquitted by the Manitoba Court of Appeal of the 1981 slaying of Barbara Stoppel after three trials and nearly four years in custody. The three justices cited legal errors in the trial, including alibi witness exclusion and juror instruction flaws.
Prime Minister Brian Mulroney dodged confirming a Southam News leaked document showing he personally vets patronage appointments twice. In Commons, Sheila Copps and John Rodriguez pressed him as he noted cabinet orders require his sign-off and he would see the file, but he declined to discuss the document’s core claims.
Alberta Attorney General Neil Crawford says lobbying petitions do not affect due process after a Catholic group urged charges if the French film Hail Mary is shown at the Princess Theatre. He notes there is no offence under the Criminal Code and no basis to press charges. Members backing the group include Rabbi Haim Kemelman and Dr Mohammad Nagi.
