Canada’s worst airline crash near Gander kills 258

A DC 8 carrying 250 U S service personnel and eight crew crashed after refueling near Gander Airport in Newfoundland. Witnesses described a massive fire and explosion. The plane was en route from Cologne to Hopkinsville with 101st Airborne personnel. No terrorism suspected. a temporary morgue was set up at the airport. External Affairs conveyed condolences to the U S and Canadian people.

Getty wins Edmonton Whitemud byelection to secure majority

Free trade threatens egg jobs in southern Alberta

Wally Bertrand of Area 1 Alberta Egg Marketing Board warns free trade with the United States could cost more than 300 jobs in southern Alberta egg production. Laurence Nicholson of Alberta Wheat Pool says the poultry sector would suffer, with production possibly dropping to 20 percent of current levels. The Alberta Pool urges excluding the egg sector from talks, while Bertrand cites U.S. industry practices and labor costs as a competitive disadvantage. Continued on Page A2.
