Millionaire Belzberg Freed After Kidnapping Near Calgary

Hyman Belzberg was released unharmed from a shopping centre parking lot near his Calgary home after a kidnapping by three gunmen. Police arrested three men, two from Edmonton and one from Calgary. A ransom demand was issued but no money changed hands.

Charges Pending After Death Of Two-Year-Old In Calgary

A 31 year old city man may face manslaughter or second degree murder after his two year old stepdaughter Kimberly Painter died in a Calgary hospital on life support. The man appeared in provincial court on a charge of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. case adjourned for bail hearing with further charges expected. Police linked to a kidnapping of Calgary furniture retailer Belzberg. several suspects were arrested and a ransom was sought. Belzberg, 57, director in First City Financial Corp, was abducted by masked gunmen near Cristy’s Arcade Furniture. The family, prominent in Calgary's Jewish community, controls First City Financial Corp with assets of about $2.2 billion.

Santa Claus Fund sees rising appeals for food hampers

The Salvation Army in Medicine Hat reports increasing Santa Claus Fund applications for food hampers, with daily requests rising from four or five to as many as 20 as Christmas nears. Last year 87 hampers helped 283 people. current requests would exceed 2000 people. Donations include a $500 Rotary Club gift and numerous smaller gifts from community members to fund nonperishable foods and children's toys.
